Alexander Calder y Pablo Picasso se conocieron en 1931. Sin embargo, no sería hasta 1937 cuando los genios sellarían su encuentro más notable como figuras de la vanguardia parisina durante la Exposición Internacional de París en el Pabellón Republicano Español. Picasso recreaba, en su reconocida obra Guernica (1937), la destrucción causada por el bombardeo nazi a la población homónima y Calder lo acompañaba con su Fuente de Mercurio (1937), inspirada en el asedio que las tropas franquistas mantenían sobre las minas de Amadén durante la Guerra Civil Española. Pero más allá de las preocupaciones sociales que los ubicaban en el centro de la escena durante un período de gran agitación política en Europa, existe un diálogo inherente al legado de estas dos figuras, un diálogo que, a pesar de los años, ha trascendido en el afán de sus descendientes: Alexander S. C. Rower y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso.

Rower y Ruiz-Picasso, movidos por la privilegiada relación de parentesco que comparten con estos artistas –cada uno de ellos es nieto de los artistas–, recopilan los nexos donde se cruza el legado de sus abuelos en una exposición de más de 50 obras creadas por ambos entre 1912 y 1967. La muestra –expuesta en Almine Rech Gallery desde el 28 de octubre hasta el 17 de diciembre en su sede de Nueva York– está compuesta por pinturas, esculturas, trabajos en papel y una gran cantidad de piezas que han sido raramente conocidas o nunca expuestas en público con la intención de demostrar las similitudes formales, temáticas o históricas que ambos artistas compartían.
