Cartagena de Indias: solariega y estelar

The truth is you have to experience it, and you will understand me when I say that in Cartagena the day is divided literally in two: AM and PM, take this into consideration because whatever is there to do and to discover has a very marked schedule or the heat will beat you

AM

Arrancamos la mañana en el histórico Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa (antiguo Convento de Las Clarisas), ubicado en la plaza del mismo nombre. Este lugar es ideal para desayunar y experimentar uno de los predilectos manjares costeños “La Arepa e’ huevo”, hechas a base de harina de maíz frita y rellenas de huevo o carne. No dejes de acompañarlas con un “fresco” de maracuyá o un “fresco” de aguacate.

Let’s begin the morning in the historical Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa (which used to be the Las Clarisas convent), Located in the square by the same name. This place is perfect to have breakfast and enjoy one of the favorite delicacies of the coast “La Arepa e’ huevo”, made from a corn meal base, fried and filled with eggs or meat. Make sure to try this with either a passion fruit drink or an avocado drink.

Acto seguido, hacemos un paseo en carro y salimos de La ciudad amurallada para conectarnos visualmente con la Cartagena histórica, pues nos encontramos frente al Castillo de San Felipe, la fortaleza más grande construida por los españoles en América en tiempos coloniales. Luego seguimos al Balneario de Boca Grande, puerta del Caribe y zona hotelera y de condominios de lujo; allí transitamos a través del sector de La Manga, barrio residencial de casas palaciegas en contraste con humildes viviendas construidas con ordinarias tablas y techos de zinc; también cuenta con una bahía y muelle turístico.

Then we take a car ride and we get away from the walled city to visually connect ourselves with the historical part of Cartagena since we are in front of the San Felipe Castle, the biggest fortress built by the Spanish in America during the colonization. After that, we proceed to go to Balneario de Boca Grande, a door to the Caribbean and hotel zone with luxurious condos, there we drive through the La Manga zone, a residential neighborhood with palace like houses that contrast with humble houses built with rustic boards and tin roofs, It also has a bay area and a touristic pier.

Al caer la tarde, es el momento ideal para descubrir las maravillas dentro del corazón de la ciudad caminando o en un  paseo en carreta tirado de caballos; su Catedral, el Museo de La Inquisición, el Museo del Oro Zenu, La Torre del Reloj, el Centro de Convenciones, la Iglesia y la Plaza de Santo Domingo con su divertida escultura de la Gorda Gertrudis
(obra del maestro Fernando Botero). Continuamos el recorrido, seguimos con  la cautivante compra de esmeraldas colombianas en cualquiera de sus joyerías y nos refrescamos con un colorido vaso de frutas tropicales, de esos que llevan las mujeres sobre sus cabezas transitando por el medio de las calles.

When the afternoon falls it is the ideal moment to discover the wonders hidden inside of the city’s heart walking or on a horse carriage; Its Cathedral, theMusem de La Inquisición, the Musem del Oro Zenu, the El Reloj Tower, the Centro de Convenciones, The Church and the Santo Domingo Square with its fun sculpture of the Gorda Gertrudis –piece by the maestro Fernando Botero-. Let us keep our journey, next is the captivating Colombian emerald shopping in any of the jewelry stores and we can refresh ourselves with a colorful glass of tropical fruits, one of those that women carry on their heads walking in the middle of the streets.

Y es hora de terminar nuestro exótico paseo. Ya entrada la noche, la idea es tomar un aguardientico o un mojito perfectamente bien preparado por el bar apostado en las Puertas del Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa, para disfrutar del atardecer con matices rojos y  naranjas para  luego movernos pocos metros hasta El Baluarte de San Francisco Javier, construido para defender el recinto del enemigo y además servía de coraza protectora ante los embates del mar. Allí lo propio es  bailar al ritmo de la más  popular y  variada música latina: salsa, merengue, guaguancó, boleros, cumbias y vallenatos.

And now it is time to end our exotic trip, and as the night falls, the idea is to have an aguardientico or a mojito perfectly made by the bar at the gates of the Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa, and to enjoy the sunset with its red and orange colors to then move a few meters to the El Baluarte de San Francisco Javier, built to safeguard the place from the enemies, at the same time that it worked as a protective shield against the sea. Once you are there the best thing to do is to dance to the most varied and popular Latin Music; salsa, merengue, guaguancó, boleros, cumbias y vallenatos.

Y a la mañana siguiente…

Levántate y dirígete al muelle Marina de Santa Cruz  y toma una lancha rápida que te llevará a las Islas del Rosario. Allí encontrarás el maravilloso  Hotel San Pedro de  Majaua, su playa e impecable servicio. En otra ubicación está el Oceanario San Martin de Pajarales. Ten en cuenta que es un paseo que dura todo el día, a menos que alquiles tu propio bote con marinero.

And the next morning…
Get up; go to the Marina de Santa Cruz pier and take a boat that will take you to the Islas del Rosario. There you will find the wonderful Hotel San Pedro de Majaua, with its beach and pristine service. In another location there is the Oceanario San Martin de Pajarales. Keep in mind that it is a trip meant to last all day unless you rent your own ship.
